Content Manager

Tree Canada is looking for an experienced storyteller with excellent writing and editing abilities in English and French. A valued member of our communications and marketing team, the Content Manager is passionate about inspiring and motivating Canadians by communicating the positive impacts of Tree Canada’s work on communities and the environment.

Term:Full-time, permanent position (37.5 hours/week)

Reports to:Director, Communications and Brand

Work location:National Capital Region

Language requirement:Fluently bilingual in written and spoken English and French

Salary Range:$65,000 – $75,000 with competitive benefits

About Tree Canada

Tree Canada is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments, in every province across the country. We help to grow Canada’s tree canopy through our programs, research, and engagement efforts and by offering grants to communities and schools. We are thought-leaders and capacity-builders, collaborating with a network of industry experts, academics, and other non-profits to deepen community knowledge and help municipalities plan and sustain local canopy.

Areas of Responsibility

The Content Manager develops and oversees the implementation of Tree Canada’s content strategy and communications campaigns to increase brand awareness, engagement and trust with target audiences and stakeholders.

A creative and strategic thinker, the Content Manager manages the organization’s editorial calendar and oversees the content creation process, ensuring that external communications are on-brand, engaging and of the highest quality.

Development and Implementation of Content Strategy:

  • Develops and updates Tree Canada’s content strategy, ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic plan and brand playbook while meeting the needs of audiences and stakeholders
  • Manages Tree Canada’s editorial calendar, from planning to content creation to publication on the organization’s website, social media platforms, e-newsletter and other channels
  • Leads planning sessions with colleagues across different departments to generate ideas and innovative ways to inspire and engage Canadians
  • Writes and edits content for communication products including web and social media content, e-newsletters, annual report, etc.
  • Reviews content developed by other team members for quality assurance and adherence to voice and tone guidelines in both English and French
  • Defines content ownership roles and processes across the organization to effectively manage and maintain content across its lifecycle
  • Oversees the creation of a robust reporting and analytics program to evaluate content performance and adjust strategies as required
  • Carries out user research and usability testing; optimizes content in line with SEO best practices and accessibility standards

  • Plans and develops organic and paid campaigns on social media and other channels
  • Manages an advertising budget to maximize impact based on strategic priorities
  • Works closely with the Head of Individual Giving to support fundraising campaigns and ensure alignment with brand guidelines
  • Coordinates the work of external contractors for special projects and campaigns

Supports Communications and Marketing Team:

  • Works with the Communications Coordinator to write and edit content, and to monitor and engage the Tree Canada community online
  • Supports website management and regular content updates using WordPress
  • Works with the Communications Coordinator to design graphics and other visual assets using Canva and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Coordinates planning and content development for National Tree Day including communications plan development, social media strategy implementation, volunteer management, event messaging, branding, promotion, marketing and media requests
  • Performs other related duties as required by the Director

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Creative, curious and strategic thinker with a continuous learning mentality
  • Minimum five years experience in content management and development at an organizational level
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing social media strategies and digital marketing campaigns
  • Excellent writing, editing, technical and copyediting skills with a demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Press style conventions
  • Excellent knowledge of social media best practices and trends
  • Experience using Google Analytics and social media reporting tools
  • Experience in user experience design is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills; an active listener who communicates respectfully and effectively
  • Strong time management, multitasking and organizational skills; ability to keep track of all moving parts of a project with both a big picture view and an attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and WordPress
  • Respect for the values and differences that all members of a small team bring to an office environment; adaptable to different approaches and flexible to move in new directions
  • Commitment to the work and values of Tree Canada, in particular a passion for the environment and a belief that organizations and individuals can and do improve lives by planting trees and addressing climate change

Education and Experience

Post secondary education in communications, marketing, public relations, and/or journalism. Minimum seven years experience in communications/marketing preferably in the not-for-profit sector. Equivalencies in education and experience will be considered.
