Project Manager, Greening Communities

The Project Manager will lead the initial phases and subsequent implementation of a pan-Canadian urban project, focusing on building the capacity of municipalities in the areas of urban forestry and community greening.

Salary Range:$55,000 – $85,000

Reports to:Director, Urban Forestry Programs

Accountable for:Three (3) direct reports

Work location:National Capital Region

Language requirement:English with French being an asset

Tree Canada is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments, in every province across the country. We help to grow Canada’s tree canopy through our programs, research, and engagement efforts and by offering grants to communities and schools. Job Summary

The Project Manager will lead the initial phases and subsequent implementation of a pan-Canadian urban project, focusing on building the capacity of municipalities in the areas of urban forestry and community greening. They will be responsible for introducing the proper framework and systems to launch the project based on sound project management practices and budgetary oversight. The Project Manager will also recruit the right talent in the right positions, stewarding a positive and efficient working relationship with our partner organizations, and demonstrating irreproachable service to local communities.

The Project Manager is a valued member of Tree Canada’s urban forestry team and works collaboratively across the organization’s internal departments to maximize project efficiency.

Project management and reporting

  • Develop a detailed project outline, timeline and implementation plan
  • Develop project management tools required to implement the project on time and on budget
  • Lead on all aspects of the budget: forecast, cashflow, variance analysis, and reporting,
  • Monitor and follow the project’s annual lifecycle, and ensure all deliverables are completed on time and on budget
  • Produce or oversee the production of all funder reports
  • Identify risks emerging during implementation and problem-solve roadblocks
  • Develop relevant monitoring tools and approaches to control and learn from the project activities, as it unfolds
  • Evaluate and document program successes/failures; recommend and implement program improvements to increase internal efficiency and to improve the experience for project participants

Stewardship of relationships and external representation

  • Maintain productive, solutions-focused relationships with the funder and partner organizations
  • Ensure all project-related updates are communicated clearly to funders and sponsors
  • Represent Tree Canada at selected conferences, roundtables and meetings
  • Establish working relationships with internal and external partners to maintain and improve Tree Canada’s expertise regarding urban forestry, particularly in tree protection, tree management, tree planting and green asset management responsibilities
  • Liaise with communications department to share project stories with Tree Canada audiences through social media, website, and newsletter

People management

  • Define roles and responsibilities of team members, based on the project scope, and lead the recruitment and training of positions
  • Provide leadership and coordination to contractors and staff regarding urban forest best practices
  • Oversee the work of consultants and contractors
  • Motivate team members, oversee performance, and provide ongoing support as required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge, interest and/or field experience in environmental sciences, arboriculture and/or urban forestry
  • Excellent project management skills and knowledge of relevant tools and software
  • Excellent budgeting, financial reporting and forecasting skills
  • Proven track record of successful project management with experience in coordinating multiple and simultaneous elements on time and on budget
  • Strong administrative, liaising and facilitation skills among multiple stakeholders
  • Self-motivated and creative thinker
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive relationships with diverse stakeholders including municipalities, conservation land managers, environmental groups, private sector, and members of the public
  • Track record of providing above and beyond customer service with a demonstrated client-focused mindset
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills; an active listener who communicates respectfully and effectively
  • Strong organizational skills; detail-oriented with a strong attention to detail
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work both independently and with a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with videoconferencing tools, Dropbox, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams); knowledge and experience in Salesforce and OpenWater is an asset
  • Respect for the values and differences that all members of a small team bring to an office environment; adaptable to different approaches and flexible to move in new directions
  • Commitment to the work and values of Tree Canada, in particular a passion for the environment and a belief that organizations and individuals can and do improve lives by planting trees and addressing climate change

Education and Experience

Post secondary education in arboriculture, urban forestry, environmental studies, land use planning, geography or a related field.

Highly desirable:

  • Accreditation by the International Society of Arboriculture
  • Accreditation as a Registered Forestry Professional

Minimum five to seven years experience working in project management in a not-for-profit organization. Equivalencies in education and experience will be considered.
